Sight Flow Indicators: They Measure Nothing, Yet Tell You Plenty
A sight flow indicator gives no flow rate; it is not an instrument. It is, however, the fastest way to confirm by eye that a pump is delivering and condensate is returning.
Let us be clear from the start: a sight flow indicator does not measure flow. It has no scale, no output signal and no place in a control loop. It is not an instrument but an observation window. The reason it keeps its place in plants anyway is simple: it answers, in seconds, questions no flowmeter answers.
The questions it answers
A flowmeter gives you a number, and if the number is right it does its job. But the questions you ask when starting a circuit for the first time are not numerical. Is anything flowing? In which direction? Is it liquid, air, or a mix of both? A sight glass answers all of these at a glance and needs no calibration.
- Is the pump delivering? A running motor is not proof of flow. With cavitation on the suction, a closed foot valve or a slipping impeller, the motor turns regardless. The glass shows the truth.
- Is the line vented? During commissioning, water and air flow together and that mixture is visible. When the flow clears, the air is gone.
- Has the fluid changed? Darkening, cloudiness or visible particles are often the first sign of a ruptured strainer, corrosion or cross-contamination.
- Is condensate returning? On steam circuits, seeing flow in the return line is the most practical confirmation that the trap is working.
What the vane type adds
At low flow, looking through a plain window is often not enough: clear liquid moving slowly looks like no movement at all. Vane (paddle) models carry a rotating element behind the glass. The spinning vane makes motion visible even when the fluid itself is not, and it will turn at very low rates. That is why the vane type is favoured on return lines and small circuits.
The glass fouls — that is not a defect
The only real maintenance item on a sight flow indicator is the glass. If the fluid leaves scale, sediment, an oil film or biological growth, the glass clouds over. At that point the indicator quietly stops working, and because nobody looks at it, nobody notices. So selection comes down to one question: who cleans this glass, and how? A removable cover reachable without draining the line turns cleaning into a five-minute job. An inaccessible indicator becomes an opaque piece of pipe within a couple of years.
Note: The body of a sight flow indicator is built to contain the fluid, and the glass is the most fragile point on the line. Do not fit one where water hammer is likely, immediately downstream of a pump discharge exposed to pressure surges, or on a route where it can take a mechanical knock.
Mounting position is a decision you cannot undo
The value of a sight flow indicator depends entirely on being seen. At eye level, in a lit position, on the operator's normal route, the glass conveys information. The same product under a ceiling, behind a platform or inside insulation does nothing useful — while still carrying the line pressure and still being a potential leak point.
That choice cannot be corrected after the pipework is welded. The position is therefore settled when the route is drawn: threaded models slot easily into small auxiliary circuits, flanged models are placed on main lines so they can be removed and cleaned. In both cases the question is the same — who is going to look at it?
